Egyptian Wheat is a tall growing member of the sorghum family. It does well in most areas of the country and when conditions are ideal it can achieve heights of 8 to12 feet. It is both affordable and easy to establish.
Egyptian Wheat offers several benefits to your hunting strategy. We have had success when planting around food plots creating a screen to improve access to our stands or blinds. We like to plant our screens a minimum of 8 to 10 feet wide.
It can also be utilized to break up or compartmentalize food plots to increase daylight usage and buck activity as they search for does. One of our favorite techniques is to strategically plant Egyptian Wheat in our plots to direct deer movement. When able to control where deer move you can set up manmade pinch points near your stands helping to tip the odds in your favor. If planted thick enough you can also use it as part of your hunting strategy when hunting from the ground. You can brush in your blind, after accessing from behind, which allows you to get close to the action.
We love using Egyptian Wheat as a temporary screen while we are simultaneously establishing long term screening options like Norway Spruce, switchgrass, or miscanthus.
The month of June is a good timeframe to target for planting Egyptian Wheat. You want to make sure there is no longer a chance of frost when planting and soil temperatures are in the mid-60’s.
