Sweet Clover is a great forage to include in a summer or annual mix. We like to include it with other clovers like crimson, berseem, and balsana. It is not as palatable as other varieties of clover but deer will utilize it. The real benefit is it is excellent at mining nutrients from deep in the soil thanks to an extensive root system which also allows sweet clover to withstand summer drought conditions extremely well.
Our favorite use is to plant it ahead of a late summer brassica plot as it is one of the best clovers at fixating nitrogen providing over 200 pounds per acre. We till in sweet clover before we plant brassicas which allows us to improve organic matter plus as the clovers decay nitrogen is released which the brassicas will utilize.
It is also an excellent choice as a pollinator attracting several beneficial insects.
If your goal is to feed deer, we recommend including sweet clover in a mix with other clovers so that you can still realize the soil benefits.
In a standalone plot a seeding rate of 12-15 pounds per acre is recommended.
