Egyptian Wheat is a fast growing, ultra-tall screening cover that offers several great benefits for a well-thought-out hunting plan. It is a warm-season annual and can reach 8-12 feet tall under good conditions. It is both affordable and easy to establish.
In a hunting setup, Egyptian Wheat isn’t about feeding deer – it’s about controlling how they use your property. It can be planted with the intent of creating travel corridors that predictably guide deer past your stand locations. It is also a good tool for breaking up larger plots (compartmentalization) which results in less perceived pressure, better movement, and more daylight activity. If planted thick enough you can also use it as part of your hunting strategy when hunting from the ground. You can brush in your blind, after accessing from behind, which allows you to get close to the action.
If you are having issues with access, neighbors setting up on property lines, or poachers planting Egyptian Wheat can establish a barrier around your plots, hiding stand access routes, and screen views from the road or property lines. Our best results have been when we plant at least 15 feet wide. If you have room and can do 20 feet wide that’s better yet. We love using Egyptian Wheat as a temporary screen while we are simultaneously establishing long term screening options like Norway Spruce, switchgrass, or miscanthus.
When used correctly Egyptian Wheat can be one of the most effective tools you can plant to actually make your property hunt better. When you are able to control what deer see and where they go that gives you a huge advantage.
The month of June is a good timeframe to target for planting Egyptian Wheat. You want to make sure there is no longer a chance of frost when planting and soil temperatures are in the mid-60’s.
