Forage Collards are part of the brassica family and we recommend including them in your own brassica mix for increased diversity. They are a key part of each of the brassica mixes that we currently offer.
Collards are highly palatable, easily digestible, and are a great source of protein. Deer prefer them compared to other brassicas when they are available. Even when deer are heavily browsing them, they will continue to grow helping to ensure a viable food source throughout hunting season.
They perform well in potential drought conditions early in the season as well as extreme cold temperatures when hunting seasons are winding down in December. Your soil will also benefit from planting forage collards as they are excellent for breaking up hardpan, scavenging nutrients, and suppressing weed growth.
Forage Collards do not produce a bulb like turnips.
A late summer planting at the end of July, similar to other brassicas, is perfect if planting as a stand-alone crop. When planted alone and broadcasted we recommend 6 to 8 pounds per acre.
