Game Plan is a strong annual clover mix that establishes fast, provides a high protein forage, and ensures strong attraction. It is also excellent at fixing nitrogen and improving your soil. Game Plan is also an excellent choice if you are looking to plant something for attracting pollinators like butterflies and honeybees.
We started by selecting three different varieties of clovers (red crimson, berseem, and balansa) that complement each other in growth characteristics and timing. Benefits include fast germination, high palatability that ensures deer usage, and staggered growth which increases the grazing window. Weather is not a factor since this mix is cold tolerant and will also do a great job at handling drought conditions. It can also accommodate soils that are slightly wet.
We like to establish Game Plan in the spring. It can be established alone (including frost seeded) or with a nurse crop like oats at 40 pounds per acre. Weed suppression is improved when planting with oats or other cereal grains like winter rye or spring triticale.
Maintenance is easily performed with herbicides or by mowing.
Planting Game Plan gives you plenty of options. You can till it in ahead of a brassica planting and take advantage of the nitrogen gains as the clover breaks down. You can also leave it thru fall before frost seeding the following spring with a perennial clover mix. .
