Kickstart is a very versatile mix that can be benefit your food plot program in several different ways. It can help to improve soil nutrient levels, increase organic matter, and aid in controlling erosion while providing a nutritious food source high in protein (up to 28%). Once established it can aid in weed control with typical clover maintenance techniques like mowing or using appropriate herbicides.
This mix would be an excellent choice for a carryover plot ahead of a brassica or corn planting the following year that requires lots of nitrogen. Clovers, especially the varieties in this blend, are able to fixate nitrogen that remains in the soil for future plantings. Think of it like free fertilizer!
We use three diverse clover varieties including medium red, balansa, and a cold hardy berseem option. This plot can be effective for multiple seasons and will definitely pack a punch by producing forages that are highly palatable, easily digested, and will be available the majority of the year.
Kickstart can be planted in the spring using oats as a nurse crop. Once established you can mow the oats eight weeks later at which point the clovers will start to shine. You can also frost seed into existing plots.
Planting rate is 8 to 12 pounds per acre.
